Alvin Glen DeGarmo, 79, died December 28, 2021, at his granddaughter, Ashley’s home in Meriden, Kansas. Hospice was called in to assist with his end of life. He was born February 11, 1942, in Canon City, Colorado. The son of Harlen DeGarmo, Sr. and Ethel (Hockett) DeGarmo. Alvin graduated from Haviland High School in 1960. He had lived in Canon City, CO, Augusta, Satanta, Belvidere and Haviland, Kansas. He was a member of the Haviland United Methodist Church, Fire Chief of the Haviland Fire Department, and Webelos Scout Leader. On November 6, 1960, Alvin married Judy Higgins. He was preceded in death by his wife Judy DeGarmo, son James (Brad) Bradley DeGarmo, his parents and two brothers. He is survived by two sons Jesse DeGarmo and fiancé Lawanna Lemons, Topeka, Kansas, Jason and wife Shelli DeGarmo, Hutchinson Kansas, five Grandchildren and eight Great-grandchildren. Alvin was a cowboy and worked on ranches in Belvidere, worked at the Haviland Coop in the elevator, feed mill and as a soil sample tester. He also owned a hardware store, worked as a maintenance man for the Kiowa County Hospital, and retired from the Haviland Telephone Company. As well as many jobs, Alvin owned DeGarmo’s Fixit and cleaned a lot of sewers. He mowed the Haviland Bank lawn as well as mowing and doing maintenance at the College Hill Apartments. Alvin was great at being the care giver to his son Brad for almost 35 years and the care giver for his wife Judy for many years. He did a lot of recycling. Alvin loved being a Dad, a cowboy, spending time with his Grandkids and Great-grandkids. Alvin was the spiritual leader for his family and friends. Many times he would tell his family and friends “just give it to God and trust in Him”. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 2nd, 2022, 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Fleener Funeral Home, 514 S. Main St., Greensburg, Kansas. Funeral services and celebration of Alvin’s life will be held 10:30 am Monday January 3, 2022, at the Haviland United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Fillmore presiding. Burial in the Haviland Cemetery immediately following the service. Memorials are suggested to the Haviland United Methodist Church in care of Fleener Funeral Home, PO Box 41, Greensburg, KS 67054.
