Dale D. Kern, 90, died January 3, 2015 at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. He was born July 10, 1924 in Coolidge, Kansas the son of Lloyd and Florence (Alexander) Kern. On September 28, 1947 he married Virginia “Lucille” Lewis. They lived in Greensburg, Kansas and had a son Gary and daughter Connie. Dale worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, retiring in 1979. Lucille preceded him in death in August 1984.
Dale married Virginia Lee Jones in Feb.1985. They lived in Greensburg until moving to Hutchinson, Kansas in 1987. They enjoyed many years of retirement together managing their rental properties, having garage sales and traveling.
In 2008 they moved to assisted living in Hutchinson, later that year Virginia was moved to a memory care facility and Dale moved to Great Bend to be near his family. He lived in Larned for a short time to be able to spend time with his twin sister Dorothy until her death.
In August 2013 he moved to Topeka to be near his son Gary and grandson Gregg. He was an avid sports fan of all teams and spent his time watching all type of sports on TV. He learned to use a computer for emails and followed the stock market daily.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Kern, Hutchinson, son Gary Kern and wife Carolyn, Topeka, daughter Connie Wilcox and husband Jeff, Lubbock, Texas, grandsons Gregg Kern, Olathe, Kansas and Brian Wilcox and wife Chiarra, Lubbock, and great granddaughter Kennedy Kern, Great Bend, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Lucille Kern, brothers Paul Kern, Wesley Kern, Harold Kern, sisters, Ruth Marsh and Dorothy Rose.
Funeral service will be 11 am, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Fleener Funeral Home, 514 S. Main, Greensburg with Pastor Tim Adrian presiding. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg. The family will greet friends from 10-11 Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Midland Care Hospice House, Topeka, in care of Fleener Funeral Home.
