Mullinville- Dorothy Elaine (Steffen) McElwain, 87, was born March 24, 1930 to John C. and Anna W. (Harms) Steffen in Cunningham, Kansas. She passed to her heavenly home Thursday evening, May 11, 2017 at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt, Kansas.
Dorothy was raised in Cunningham, Kansas and married Alan Clair McElwain October 24, 1948. She enjoyed living on the family farmstead in Mullinville, Kansas and was actively involved in the Mullinville community for over 60 years raising four children, Chris, Lanita, Rhonda and Thomas. In 1978, Dorothy began working as Deputy Court Clerk at Greensburg District Court. She retired in 1995 to spend time with Clair and their family. For the last five years, she lived in Parkwood Village in Pratt, Kansas where she enjoyed the company of many friends. She was a loving caregiver to family members and friends in her later years.
Dorothy loved her family and adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John C. Steffen and Anna W. Harms Steffen; husband, Alan Clair McElwain; daughter, Rhonda Lyn McElwain; and son, Thomas Craig McElwain; sister, Velma Wilson; brother, Elmer Steffen; sister, Helen Link; and sister, Florence Low.
Survivors include son, Chris Alan McElwain and wife Diane, Mullinville, Kansas; daughter, Lanita Kay Lukens and husband Gary, Edmond, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in law, Edwin and Mona Steffen, Cunningham, Kansas and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was a long-time member of Mullinville United Methodist Church where services will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00am. Graveside services to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Mullinville.
