Pratt

Pratt-Janie Frances Reed Kemp, 79, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply. Born on January 10, 1946, in Dinuba, California, Janie was the daughter of James Russell and Margaret Reed. She grew up in a large, loving family, alongside her brothers George Henry, James Russell, Paul Daniel, Earnest Ray, and David Randall, and sisters Linda Ann and Deborah Lynn. Janie married the love of her life, Larry Roger Kemp, on June 12, 1963. The two shared 23 beautiful years together and raised three beloved children, Larry Scott, Crystal Dawn, and Jamie Nichole. She later married Jim Schur in December of 1989, and throughout her life, she remained a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was crowned Mrs. Kiowa County in 1986, a fitting honor for a woman so full of warmth, grace, and community spirit. Janie had a way of drawing people in—her kindness, humor, and genuine love for others made her home a haven not just for family, but for anyone in need of comfort. She had a special gift for nurturing others, earning her the affectionate nickname “Doc Kemp” from those who relied on her care and wisdom. Her passions were many: dancing with remarkable rhythm, playing Yahtzee and Wahoo with lively competitiveness, and filling her home with laughter and music—especially Christmas songs, which she started playing joyfully in July. The sound of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee will forever bring fond memories to those who loved her. Janie also found joy in simple moments—baking her famous cinnamon rolls, crafting ceramics as heartfelt gifts, and sipping coffee over crossword puzzles. Her sharp memory made her the family’s historian, never forgetting a birthday, anniversary, or story from years gone by. Her faith in Jesus, which deepened later in life, sustained her with peace and love through her final days. She is survived by her children, Larry Scott Kemp, Crystal Dawn Gray, and Jamie Nichole Neumann; her siblings Paul Daniel Reed, Linda Ann Davis, David Randall Reed, and Deborah Lynn Johnson; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, who will all carry her legacy forward. Services to celebrate Janie’s life will be held at Reach Church in Pratt, Kansas, Friday, November 7, 2025, 2:00 p.m., followed by graveside services at 4:00 pm in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg, Kansas. A visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday at the church in Pratt. Memorials are suggested the Janie Kemp Final Expense Fund in care of Fleener Funeral Home, PO Box 41, Greensburg, KS 67054-0041.
