Mullinville

Kenneth Boyd McFadden was born February 2, 1960, in Greensburg, Kansas, to Kenneth Elmer and Rebecca Jean (Price) McFadden. He was the first son and the third of four children. He passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2026, in the pasture at his home at sundown, boots on, doing what he loved. He attended Mullinville Schools through graduation in 1978. He accepted an acting scholarship to Seward County Community College where his shenanigans earned him a request not to return for a second year. He met June Muriel Boulter in the high school parking lot during the Mullinville 4 th of July celebration, and a few days later he took her on her first date. They married three years later in the Mullinville United Methodist Church on February 21, 1981. Eleven short months later they welcomed their first son, Luke. Three years after that they completed their family with the birth of C.J. Their lives were greatly blessed again when their first grandchild, Jack Lukas, was born in 2020. Their hearts expanded even larger when William Jay was born in 2022, and Scarlett Jean in 2024. Being Papa was his greatest achievement and wildest joy. Boyd developed his incredible work ethic while helping on the family farm beside his parents, sisters and brother. The skills and knowledge he gained on the farm were instrumental in him being hired at Northern Natural Gas Company in 1981. His 41-year career spanned many positions, including welder’s helper, team leader, and measurement technician (his favorite). He ultimately retired in 2022 as operations manager. While working long hours, shift work and overtime at Northern, he simultaneously built a cattle operation alongside his father, wife and children which grew into the family operation it is today. He loved working on their sandhills ranch alongside his family. Boyd was very active in his community. He was a longtime member of the Kiowa County Farm Bureau Board, Hillcrest Cemetery Board, Kiowa County Fair Board, and Kiowa County Extension Board. He regularly donated blood to the Red Cross and tracked where his donation went. He was a member of the Mullinville United Methodist Church where he greatly enjoyed serving as the chairman of the dishwashing committee for the groundhog supper, a tradition he enjoyed on his birthday each year. He was an avid fisherman and a firearm enthusiast, but his strong work ethic greatly hindered his professional fishing career. He spent many years competing in the sport of Team Penning with his wife and sons. Boyd’s hobbies reflected his love for the outdoors, yet his greatest passion lay in teaching and sharing his knowledge with others. He always put others needs and wants ahead of his own. His selflessness, patience, and loyalty were the hallmarks of a life well-lived. He was known to many as the best husband, father, papa, and friend anyone could ever ask for. Unlike many men, he was never afraid to show his emotions. He told his family how much he loved them daily and the people he cherished never doubted just how special they were to him. Boyd is survived by his wife June of 45 years; sons Luke (Becky) and C.J. (Christina); grandchildren Jack, Will, and Scarlett; his right-hand-man Peter Banman (Hannah); sisters Monica Hayse (Dale), Brenda Murray (Doug); brother Murray McFadden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were all very dear to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Rebecca. Visitation will be held on July 10, 2026, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Mullinville United Methodist Church, Mullinville, Kansas. A celebration of Boyd’s life will be held July 11, 2026, at the Mullinville United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. with graveside services to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mullinville, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Kiowa County Fire Department or Mullinville Recreation Commission for the playground committee. Memorials may be sent in care of Fleener Funeral Home, P.O. Box 41, Greensburg, Kansas 67054. The outpouring of love and support has been a testament to the good family man and friend Boyd was. Someone said, “Boyd was the kind of man other men wish they could be”. He will be deeply missed, but he leaves an enduring legacy of love behind.
