Greensburg

Greensburg - Marjorie Lee Schmidt, 87, died February 7, 2026, in Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, Greensburg, Kansas. She was born October 16, 1938, the daughter of William Ronald “Buck” and Ruth (Hopkins) Mead. Marge lived a long, love‑filled life, the kind built on simple kindness. Born on October 16, 1938, she carried a gentle way about her—warm, welcoming, and always ready to make someone feel at home. Family was the center of her world. She poured her heart into every child, grandchild, great‑grandchild, niece, nephew, cousin, and friend who needed her. But Marge’s idea of “family” stretched far beyond blood. She had a gift for becoming a mom to anyone who crossed her path. If you needed advice, a listening ear, a hot meal, or just someone to sit beside you, she showed up without hesitation. Caring for people wasn’t something she tried to do, it was simply who she was. She is survived by her children: Jay (Jo) Schmidt, Rex (Janie) Schmidt, Brenda Schmidt, and Tamra (Terry) Unruh; and her sister‑in‑law, Donna Mead. Her grandchildren include: Jonathon Hayes; Cody (Maggie) Hayes; Zach (Katlyn) Unruh; Casy (Kel) Unruh; Lacy (Judd) Kallina; Andrew (Megan) Unruh; Rachel (Daniel) Bradley; and Charity (JT) Beall. Her great‑grandchildren are: Ellie, Cash, and Emma Hayes; Stella and Mila Unruh; Mason, Landon, and Joelle Unruh; Jennings and Lilly Kallina; and Walker Beall. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her deeply. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Buck and Ruth Mead; her brother, Ronnie Mead; her sister, Karen Copeland; and her grandson, Shandon Schmidt. She found joy in the simple things—her family gathered close, a good rodeo, an old western playing in the background, and settling in with a book she couldn’t put down. Marge worked all kinds of jobs over the years, and she gave her whole heart to every one of them. Her last job at The Big Well fit her just right. With her deep love for Kiowa County history, she became a natural storyteller, always proud to share the stories of the place she’d called home her whole life. Marge will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, and the fierce, steady love she gave so freely. She made life softer for the people around her, and her presence will be missed in ways words can’t quite capture. Memorial graveside services and celebration of Marge’s life will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg, with Father Ted Skalsky officiating. A visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday at Fleener Funeral Home, Greensburg. Memorials are suggested to the Big Well Museum and the Kiowa County Library, Greensburg, in care of Fleener Funeral Home, 514 S. Main St., PO Box 41, Greensburg, KS 67054.
