Micheal Dean “Mike” Schmidt

Mike Schmidt, 55, (Pratt, KS) went home to be with the Lord on July 23, 2017. He was born March 19, 1962, in Greensburg, Kansas, to Harold and Sarah Schmidt where he grew up on the family farm. It was on the farm that he developed his good work ethics. Mike graduated from Greensburg High School in 1980 and then attended Dodge City technical college. On November 14, 1990, he married the love of his life, Kathy (Williams) Schmidt, in Reno, Nevada. On June 28, 1991, they gave birth to their daughter Kristin (his Tweet), which he later referred to as a milestone for his relationship with Christ. In 1992, the family moved to Kingman where on April 22, 1993, the family expanded with the birth of their son Austin Micheal Schmidt (Bud) in 1993, the family of four moved back to Greensburg and enjoyed frequent trips to Belvedere where they would go hunting, fishing, and camping. It was during this time that he was united with his oldest daughter Nichole and was able to build a loving relationship with her and her family. Later they decided to expand their family and God blessed them with Caleb on December 4, 2005, and Joshua on August 27, 2007. In 2006 the family moved to Pratt, Kansas where he spent his remaining years. He attended every sporting event his children were in and coached his son’s teams, despite working long hours. After his oldest children finished high school, his passion for college ministry developed. During that time, every Sunday after church their house would be filled with college students where Mike and Kathy would be found busily preparing meals for the “poor starving college students.” This would be followed by Bible studies in their home. He became “dad” to many young men and women through this ministry. He delighted in every opportunity to share the Gospel with these young men and women, his co-workers, and anyone he came into contact throughout his life. His passion was for all to know and accept Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. His love for the Lord was evident. He had a strong love for God’s Word and lived it out every day of his life. Even during this difficult time, he still shared God’s love with people he met. Mike is survived by his mother Sarah Schmidt, Greensburg; wife Kathy Schmidt, Pratt; his three sons Austin (Caitlin) Schmidt, Wichita, Caleb and Joshua Schmidt, Pratt; his two daughters Nichole (Ryan) Cooper, Santa Rita; and Kristin (Kevin) Sweeney, Wichita; his grandchildren Sydney, Carlee, James, and Daniel, two brothers James and Willie (Joyce) Schmidt, all of Greensburg; and a sister Kathy (Ray) Schmidt, Jonestown, Texas. He was preceded by his father Harold Schmidt and an infant brother Melvin Schmidt.Funeral services and celebration of Mike’s life will be 10:00 am Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the First Southern Baptist Church, Pratt.
