William Lee "Bill" Dunbar, Jr.

Wellsford- William Lee “Bill” Dunbar, Jr., died February 19, 2024, at home in rural Haviland, Kansas. He was born August 3, 1939, in Haviland the son of William Lee and Freda Imogene (Trainor) Dunbar. He graduated from Wellsford Grade School in 1953, and Haviland High School in 1957. He served in the US Army Reserves 1957-1964, then attended Pratt Community College. Bill grew up working at his father’s elevator at Wellsford, and farmed his grandfather’s farm for 64 years, until his death. Along with farming, Bill was a substitute mail carrier from 1982-2008, retiring as a full-time carrier in 2017. He was a lifetime resident of the Wellsford-Haviland area. He was a member of the Haviland United Methodist Church. Bill is survived by a brother George Wayne and wife Carol, Buena Vista, Colorado, a sister Sue Gifford, Platte City, Missouri, two nephews, George Gifford and Justin and wife Shannon Gifford, four nieces, Jennifer and husband Kevin Diesslin, Jessica and husband Todd Hauck, LaDonna and husband Bret Thompson, Loretta and husband Anthony Mann, six Great-nephews and four Great-nieces, and a long-term companion Ardeth Scott, Haviland. Funeral Services and celebration of Bill’s life will be held 2:00 pm Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Haviland United Methodist Church, Haviland with Rev. Alex Bob-Karimu presiding. Burial will follow in Haviland Cemetery, Haviland. A visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday at Fleener Funeral Home, Greensburg, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the Wellsford Community Church and the Haviland United Methodist Church, both in care of Fleener Funeral Home, 514 S. Main St., PO Box 41, Greensburg, KS 67054.
